Welcome to Ms. Lloyd's Laboratory! My students come from all over Los Angeles, most are from low-income areas, and all of them are creative, active learners who are naturally curious about the world around them. My job is to give them the tools they need not just to be successful science students, but to be critical consumers of information.
Our school believes that when we nurture curiosity, we can expect creativity!
What I love about my students is the energy they bring to the classroom each day. In our classroom, it's not uncommon to see students applauding each other, and cheering each other on as we work through assignments and activities in class. Teaching 7th graders is no easy task, but my students get me through it by making me laugh and smile every single day.
My Project
These scales will give students the power to carry out chemical reactions on their own, at their own lab stations. Currently I have only a handful of working digital scales, which was not a problem during distance learning, but now that students are back in the classroom they need their own functioning supplies.
The saying "power in numbers" is especially true in the science classroom!
Have you ever seen a group of 30 twelve-year-olds try to share five things between them? It's a catastrophe waiting to happen! Even with the most well-mannered and cooperative students, it's just not fun to wait in line every time you need to weigh something. I'm a big believer in the idea that science, and especially chemistry, should be fun!
Giving my students their own supplies allows them to function with more autonomy, as they would in a college chemistry class. Though that is years away for them, I have seen first-hand that when I treat them as mature, laboratory professionals, they actually start to act like it!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
