My Students

“I enjoy Math because I get to play with my partner,” said one student. “I enjoy Writing Workshop because we write small moments,” said another student. These are my students’ responses when I asked them what subject they enjoy the most as second graders.

My second grade students are exploring new concepts as mathematicians and writers.

They are solving subtraction problems by playing dice games with a partner. They are working on adding dialogue to make their stories captivating and engaging to their readers.

My Project

A new carpet with spots for each student will allow them to turn and talk to a partner. This strategy fosters oral language development in all subject areas. Students can also be grouped into small groups by their color-coded rows. Being grouped by rows promotes cooperation or collaboration for a common objective.

During math and writing workshop, students will have access to flexible seating on the carpet.

Being able to work on the carpet for all subject areas promotes student motivation and engagement. In a classroom environment with flexible seating, students will be able to solve problems and make choices independently.
