Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The computer lab at my school is the hub of the school these days. I teach technology in a K-5 building which serves 460 students. Our student body is 60% Hispanic and 55% Low Income. We have a 95% attendance rate. We perform at or above state averages for our state standardized testing. We have been recognized for this by Illinois State University as a Best Practices School.

Despite the fact that we have 5 new Smartboards in our building we only have 1 digital camera. We have brand new computers in the lab operating with Microsoft Vista. This opens up the opportunity for students to create their own multimedia projects using Microsoft Movie Maker and other programs. With the advent of Web 2.0 students live in an age where they can create content to share with world.

With these cameras students and teachers will both be able to benefit. I will team with classroom teachers to create multimedia projects. The kindergarten is going to make an ABC video. The 1st grade is going to make a morph of trees throughout the year in their study of the seasons. Upper elementary will take the camera on field trips so that they can create movies of their trip and show the whole school what they learned. The 3rd grade is going to make a book for new students about the staff and different locations throughout the building. Staff members will be able to use the cameras to videotape lessons to improve instruction. They will also be able to use the cameras in their classrooms as they see fit when I am not using them in the lab. They will be housed in the library and use a check out system with the lab getting 1st priority.

You will make it possible for my students to share their abundant 21st century creativity with the world.
