My Students

My students are some of the most eager to learn people I have encountered in my teaching career! They are bold, unafraid and have a willingness to learn that drives me to be a better teacher each day.

Though many of my students come from low income households, that doesn't stop them from being creative, exploratory and passionate about music and the arts.

Our music class gives my students the opportunity to express their ideas, thoughts and creativity when performing or composing. Music sends students around the world to learn about different cultures and points of view. My students are elated to use music as a tool to see the world from a different vantage point.

I am so fortunate to work with 500 amazing elementary students year round. We are located in the heart of Brooklyn, NY. In my class, I seek to teach my students not only music, but also citizenship, critical thinking, community, team work and leadership to help our students grow into wonderful caring people.

My Project

These Kala Makala Soprano Ukulele packages would bring tremendous opportunities for my students in our Ukulele club. My students currently do not have any exposure to string instruments in our music classroom. String instruments are a vital part of instrument ensembles, song writing and musical performances. A Ukulele is a great introductory instrument to get students familiar with how to strum and pluck a string instrument.

Ukuleles will bring our school community together as a accompaniment instrument to songs and pieces we are learning in class and as a Ukulele performance ensemble.

The Ukulele club will meet once a week to enrich their musical experiences with the brand new string instrument. Students will learn traditional music literacy as well as how to read Ukulele chords. To be successful at playing the Ukulele, students will need to learn correct playing posture, fingering and strumming techniques. Students will learn basic care of the Ukuleles, responsibility, leadership and teamwork techniques as the club rehearses together. The club will have various performance opportunities in our two yearly concerts!

I know my students will greatly benefit from the new opportunity to use these Ukuleles! Ukes will enrich my students' musical experience and allow students to express themselves creatively and promote life long music making.
