Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"And the boy loved the tree.......very much. And the tree was happy."-from Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree. My students have become environmentally conscious on a daily basis and try to reduce, reuse, and recycle. They love to share ideas and work in groups. Why not do both at the same time?

My students go to a school that has very few trees and two small patches of grass.

Their playground and "soccer field" is blacktop. Through the stories we have read, they have learned about green schools and recycling. We recycle and reuse in our classroom and they are conscious about trying to "save the planet." These strips and mats would be a way to save paper since they are constantly used during instruction, guided practice, and independent work time.

My Project

The possibilities are endless! The strips and mats could be used for so many different lessons. The strips could be used to develop and strengthen various language arts skills such as sequencing, punctuation, capitalization, cause and effect, predicting, summarizing, sentence extension, parts of speech, etc. The mats could be used to strengthen writing skills such as main idea and details, adding descriptive language, and utilizing thinking maps. I wouldn't need the mass of paper I usually use to create these lessons. The students or I could wipe off and start fresh.

Students love to work in groups and learn from each other as well.

Students usually write on paper to express the group's ideas. These write and wipe materials would save tape, paper, and pencils, which would save trees during these activities. And any time a student is allowed to use marker over a pencil motivates and excites them that much more to dig in, participate, and learn.
