My Students

I recall as a child my parents provided me with items that I could call my own. My students do not have that opportunity. I currently teach in a 4th grade inclusive classroom where all of my students live in a shelter. School for them is their refuge, where home was mine.

I teach students with severe disabilities in a high crime and poverty neighborhood.

Not only do my students have severe disabilities, they also have to deal with the fact that they live in the shelter, and they could be asked to move after a period of time. Often my students mention that they have nothing to call their own. My students are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders so to speak.

My Project

I teach in a small enclosed space with limited room for anything extra. Seat pockets are a great way to save space and a great way for my students to learn organizational skills. Seat pockets might seem minuscule to some, but I want my students to call them their own. My students will be able to know that when they place a book inside of that seat pocket, it will be there until they remove it. Seat pockets ease with transition time as well. It saves time from moving around to retrieve certain items. Sitting at tables instead of desks leaves students with no room to store items and create clutter on their desk.

I want to teach my students responsibility and organization.

Organization equals success. When students walk into a clean and organized classroom, they will be inclined to keep it neat and tidy. Hopefully, their own seat pocket that they can decorate and call their own will bring a smile to my students' face.
