My Students

I strive to create a classroom that facilitates independence for my adventurous, enthusiastic, fun-loving, inquisitive, eager learners. These students come to school everyday to create, explore, and investigate through hands on learning. I teach in a rural school, so many of the children come to me from a migrant household and are yearning for a safe, loving, and comfortable place to learn and grow. My classroom is a second home to my students. They work cooperatively, support and care about each other. We truly become a family during our time together throughout the school year.

My Project

Space in a small classroom with twenty-one students is crucial to organization and time management.

I meet with EVERY student EVERY day in small groups.

I am required to keep a working portfolio on each student in class. When in small groups we are working on revising mistakes, as well as adding new skills to our repertoire.

We have one file cabinet in our room that is difficult for the students to access. I teach the responsibility of filing their own papers; having a very limited amount of counter space makes it difficult to keep files close to the small group area. The students have a file box for home papers and baskets for grading that utilize the most of that space. I have tried file boxes and crates on the floors but they become burdensome and then take up limited floor space as well. It seems as though someone is always tripping over one creating a safety hazard.

I tried the lowest file drawer in the file cabinet but it was basically a waste of time as the kids piled up waiting to file or grab what they needed. This situation frustrated all of us and I now have a paperwork nightmare to file nightly because I need them to access their work.

A rolling, locking box that can be accessed from both ends with the benefit of a work space (when closed) adds to the usability of the space it requires.

The students and I will have the flexibility of a stow and go, rolling portfolio cart that is conveniently accessible from anywhere in the room giving us more time for learning and saving me hours of filing!
