My Students

Our students have a lot to be proud of, but they do not always see it that way. When they can create a piece of art, their pride shines through and lifts them up in ways they do not often get to experience. Incorporating an art project into a lesson always generates maximum authentic engagement!

Our school is for students with special needs who, because of severe emotional and behavioral issues, have not been able to learn successfully at their regular schools.

Our school provides for them a place where they can learn coping skills and problem-solving strategies while continuing to be exposed to the district-wide academic curriculum. Instead of being suspended or removed from the learning environment for extended parts of the day, our goal is to keep students in class. Students are given multiple opportunities to practice the learned skills and strategies that will help them cope with the stressful situations that made it impossible for them to remain in class at their home schools. Hands-on projects are highly motivating for these often difficult-to-motivate population.

My Project

In great part due to their severe behavior, which has resulted in having to be frequently removed from class at their home schools, our students often come to us with tremendous academic deficits - add to that our emphasis on social skills, problem-solving and coping skills - and you can see why some of the things that they love so much, like art and music, are just not able to be made priority. We are going to combine an art project with a lesson in economics and teach students about budgeting, saving, opportunity cost, choice, and economic wants and make a piggy bank using plaster-wrap, paint and Mod-Podge. These pigs come out so professional looking! We will talk about using that bank to save for some of their economic wants! It is an art project that will last and so will the economics concepts they learn while creating it!

We all know what it feels like to create something of which one can be proud!

Perhaps you can even still recall some of those art projects that made you feel that pride that comes with creating something. One of those projects was a piggy bank made with plaster cloth, paint and Mod-Podge. The product that emerges from this art project is a no fail, awesome looking piggy bank and the kids will love it! This project will also concretely connect saving money to all those economics lessons!
