My Students

Classroom teachers face challenges on a daily basis - creating rigorous curriculum, engaging a wide range of students, dealing with pressures of time and testing... Having a limit to the number of copies that we can make each month seems minor, but does in fact pose huge problems.

I teach 8th grade science in a K-8 school.

Our students are very diverse, both in cultural background and socio-economic status. The school is has a fine-arts magnet program, which means that students from around the city can attend, and we incorporate art into our curriculum as much as possible.

My Project

One of our budgetary restrictions centers on copying. We are limited in how many copies that we can make each month. I have over 100 students, and I almost use up my copies just making homework. In addition, I need to copy a weekly parent newsletter, field trip slips, lab procedures and data tables, and any other information that I want the students to have, not to waste learning time by having to hand-write it. Making my extra copies on colored paper will do two major things. One is that it will specify a use for a particular hand-out. If it's something to take home, it will be bright yellow. If it stays in their notebook, it will be orange. Having a designated color for different types of communication will help organize the students. The second benefit of having colored paper is that it will cut down on the number of extra copies that I have to make. Students don't misplace bright red or blue sheets - they stand out and are memorable.

This time of adolescence is definitely trying, for students themselves, teachers, and parents.

Something as simple as the color of paper can help students keep organized, and can help parents keep in touch with school. It would make such a difference to our class environment and to student achievement - not to mention saving paper!
