My Students

My two First Grade Dual Language classes are full of energetic, thoughtful, curious, and eager students. They have the opportunity to learn in two languages - English and Portuguese - every day.

These young minds are working hard to master reading and writing in English as well as learning to speak, read, write, and do math in Portuguese.

Despite the challenges that come with living during a world-wide pandemic, our First Graders (and their families) are doing what it takes to continue growing and progressing academically, socially, and emotionally.

We feel extremely fortunate our school has been able to stay open the past year and a half. That being said, these first graders have still been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic; teachers have been out on quarantine, students and their families have been ill, and many of the traditional school activities, procedures, and customs have been altered to allow for safety and social distancing.

My Project

There are two full classes of students who use my classroom each day. Each class spends half the day with their Portuguese teacher and half the day in my room for English. Organization, ease of transition, cleanliness, and using instructional time wisely are big factors that affect teaching and learning in Dual Language classrooms.

I would like to provide my students with chair pockets that hang over the backs of their seats; these pockets will provide a space for indiviauls to keep supplies and learning materials.

I would also like to provide individual headphones that are high-quality.

Throughout time, but especially during this COVID-19 pandemic, keeping germs at bay has been essential in stopping the spread of viruses and diseases. By keeping students' individual supplies and materials separated, we will eliminate the need for community supplies, which will help stop the spread of germs. We have tables, not desks, in our classroom; we need a place to store items that can be retrieved quickly. This will save time as well as help keep our classroom more clean and sanitary.
