Save Our Turtles!

My students need living things to enrich their life science classroom. Our class turtles need a better filter to avoid becoming a stinky classroom.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science is a fundamentally hands-on, experiential discipline. However, challenged urban districts often lack the resources to bring science alive for their students. This is especially true in life science. After all, rocks, soil and objects in motion are easier to maintain than living things.

We are a middle school - grades six through eight - struggling to raise test scores and survive another year.

My students live in one of most impoverished and crime-ridden districts with one of America's highest murder rates. With serious budget cuts on the horizon, keeping schools staffed and equipped is likely to become a serious challenge. However, my students are incredibly resilient. Despite everything they have to deal with, they never stop trying, and more often than not they succeed. My role as a teacher is to help them to explore and discover their environment, but to do that I need the proper equipment. My students also have a great deal of curiosity about their world. They want to understand the plants and animals they see every day, the food they eat, and their own transforming bodies. As a science teacher, I always try to keep my teaching grounded in the interests of my students.

My Project

Classroom pets are an important part of the biological sciences experience. With real living things in the classroom, students can observe the behavior of actual living animals at the same time that they learn about the structures and laws that support life. Living animals also stimulate my students' imaginations - I can't count the number of teachable moments that emerged from a question about one of our class pets. Too many science classrooms claim to study life, but actually contain nothing that is actually alive. More importantly, my students have become very fond of our turtles Benjamin and Shelley. It would be a shame if cost of keeping them forced me to get rid of them. The addition of a canister filter would make their habitat that much easier - and inexpensive - to maintain.

It is impossible to truly explore the biological sciences without observing real living things.

Donations to this request will allow me to bring the biological sciences alive for my students by maintaining a habitat for our class pets. Without it, I might have to get rid of our beloved turtles, which would deprive my classroom of an important educational resource.
