I have the privilege of working with the most amazing students, and teachers, at the best school! Due to the poverty level, we receive 100% free breakfast and the majority of our kids get free or reduced lunch. These kids come to school ready to learn, even though they face things that no human being should ever have to face. It is difficult to learn when you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.
As a school, we believe that every child is ours whether we teach 5th grade or 1st grade.
It is important that we educate them, and meet any needs they may have. We want them to have experiences that will challenge them to become the best they can be. We teach them important skills such as collaborating with others, being kind friends, leadership, math, writing, science, social studies, and reading. We give them the foundations to grow through school and in life. These kids are amazing and love to learn, especially when it is fun.
My Project
We recently started doing STEM, every Wednesday, in first grade. The kids rotate through our classes, and have a day of STEM. I am looking for stories, habitats, and other items to create a marvelous learning experience each week. In my room, I have several things for building but would love to have the stories to go with them. I have requested several STEM story books that will go along with our science standards, and our weekly curriculum. I have requested a microphone to use while I project a noice app. STEM is noisy! I have also requested a butterfly habitat, an ant farm, and a terrarium so that kids can experience the wonder of watching things grow. The life cycle is a big standard in first grade. I have requested a few more Bee Bots. I currently have one that is perfect for my little ones as they learn to code. The kids love coding, and this will allow them to work in teams as they rotate through centers. I have requested a STEM set to keep me filled with ideas, and a Magic School Bus set to help solidify their learning. We rarely watch videos, but these are very educational and the kids love them. They are great on the days we are stuck inside for recesses. Lastly, I have requested some lap desks, and dobbers. The lap desks will allow the kids the freedom to work together on the floor when needed, and the dobbers will be for a project in the spring when we read The Dot. Thank you for believing in my project, and my amazing first graders.
