Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in an urban setting in the Bronx. I have over sixty students per class period. I sometimes don't have enough equipment and materials to support everyone's needs. My challenge is trying to get donors to aid me in supporting their growth and development in P.E.

My students come from the Bronx, where a majority come from low-income families.

They are middle school aged and learning to grow and develop mentally and physically. It is a tough age at times. My school has the great potential to have a great physical education program. My students lack the equipment in order for my program to become a gem. My students only get PE once a week in the gym which is a shame. I believe that this age needs to burn energy and be free to express themselves physically, where some students shine instead of in the classroom. My students really don't get a lot time for physical education class and I really want them to have fun this year using new equipment so they can experience the different activities that I can do with this equipment. I want my students to be able to have their own piece of equipment and not have to share each piece of equipment for each lesson I do.

My Project

I want to give my students the opportunity to learn sports that they normally wouldn't have the opportunity to play. A majority of the equipment has been beat up over the years and I would love to have some fresh pieces to offer them. The students will be able to show off their skills and engage in physical activity where, in an urban setting, is sometimes lacking in their daily lives. They will be able to learn other ways to keep them healthy. With the jump ropes, I will be able to give each student a jump rope so they can learn what a jump rope is and how to correctly use one. With the bean bags, I can use them involving different tag games and with the gator balls I will be able to teach different lessons involving throwing and catching. I really think this equipment will allow my students to participate more, knowing that we have new equipment.

My equipment will offer them a different sport to be able to take part in.

The donation will enable me to expand my program and able to show students a new sport. Being that my budget is tight at my school, I'm trying to build an inventory to be able to offer my big class sizes equipment to have. Having these tools will push them to be more active than they normally are. It would definitely make them happy to be able to have access to the right equipment. Help me better my physical education class.
