My Students

All students, regardless of his or her disability, should be engaged and given opportunities to push through personal struggles to overcome learning obstacles and gain confidence. Technology is a great gateway to engage students and push them to perform in ways that they never thought were possible.

It has been a pleasure to work with my students during the past year and some for even three years!

They are an amazing group of 12 students, who truly exemplify what is means to be resilient, in their personal and school lives. I work at a school in the heart of Brownsville, Brooklyn, a community plagued by violence and poverty. Many of my families battle with struggles such as homelessness, poverty, living in foster care, etc. In addition to their personal struggles outside of school, each of my students has a learning disability and has had many failures in their short educational carriers before entering my classroom. As a team, my students and I, have worked tirelessly to build a STRONG learning community where everyone is a key member of the team, respects and encourages one another, and is seen for their strengths and not their challenges. Watching my students blossom into confident learners and role models in our school has been an honor. Our journey continues another year!

My Project

The Boogie Board Tablets will be used daily, in substitution to paper and pencil, as a way for students to actively work in small and large groups to record ideas and thinking. Students will be able to jot notes that will help them with independent work, record mathematical solutions, without wasting the time of erasing and feeling that their work is permanent once it hits the paper. The Boogie Board Tablets are a great tool to help students engage in learning and feel less vulnerable to share their work and take risks. Boogie Boards can easily be erased and revised, easier then paper and pencil. We spend a great deal of time working together in small groups and time is wasted passing out pencils, clipboards, and papers, having the Boogie Board Tablets would guarantee that more time is spent on working, revising, editing, and sharing thinking. Having a group of mostly boys, 11 out of 12 students, engagement is key and the boogie board tablets would offer new angle of interest.

Our classroom in the lowest tech classroom in the school, and unfortunately our school is at a significant technology disadvantage.

With your help we could get one step closer to getting the resources we need to show our work and close the tech gap.The Boogie Board tablets will help us ensure we are not wasting time recopying our thinking, for students who already have many challenges around motor and writing, and allow more time to be spent on sharing ideas and thinking, a key part of learning.
