This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Juniors and Seniors have chosen to take chemistry at the International Baccalaureate level. The selection means they have selected academic challenge over academic safety and more hours of work rather than less. They really love to get A's, but they are willing to risk a B or even a C to have the opportunity to learn chemistry at more advanced levels. They are required to complete 60 hours of lab over two years to complete the IB Diploma Program.

The Sophomores are a very diverse group of academically gifted students who are still developing their love of learning.

They are enthusiastic about completing labs and seeing demonstrations of chemical phenomena. They really enjoy the opportunity to apply new skills and knowledge to real life.

My Project

Students must have goggles to participate in chemistry lab, and it is easiest to have them ready to loan to students. However, I only have a classroom set. This is a problem because the goggles are used by multiple classes each day. It is nearly impossible to sanitize sets of goggles between classes without an ultraviolet cabinet. My classroom does not have one.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not safe for the students to wear or handle goggles that have not been sanitized.

If goggles are not sanitized, students will be unable to participate in wet labs. Since wet labs are what bring chemistry to life for each student, there must not be a loss of opportunity to participate in discovery.

A simple solution is available. A UV cabinet can be used to sanitize a full set of goggles between classes to make them safe.
