My Students

Overnight our whole life changed. I live in Breezy Point, NY and my house, cars, and possessions were severely damaged by flooding from Hurricane Sandy. The water level was more than 4 1/2ft high in my home and I lost not only my personal possessions, but many of the materials I use with my students

I work in a NYC public school and provide speech and language services to middle school students.

My students suffer from a variety of disorders including autism, learning disabilities, mental retardation, motor disorders, and poor articulation. One of the best things I ever did was purchase an Ipad. The students love using technology and it is extremely motivating for all of them. I bought that Ipad after saving for a long time and have spent over $200 on apps alone to use with my students based on their individual needs. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to purchase another one because I am in the process of rebuilding my home. My students have really benefited from using this technology everyday and miss having a variety of learning experiences at their finger tips. I have a few students who are unable to communicate and this has allowed them to participate with their peers which increases their self esteem. They are able to choose pictures and string them together into spoken language

My Project

Many of my students are visual and tactile learners and using apps on the Ipad increase their memory skills. Many of the apps I have downloaded are specific to individual students and are used both therapeutically and diagnostically. In addition, the students are able to get immediate feedback after completing a program and can share those results with their peers, teachers, and family members electronically. I used my Ipad with my students at least 5 times a day and it has really become something that they look forward to. Many times we set a goal and the students get to use it as a reward because as I'm sure you can imagine, this is a tough age group to motivate! In the aftermath of Sandy, I was left to pick up the pieces of my life and was unable to return to work for almost 3 weeks. The day I returned a student ran in saying, "It's my turn to pick our game! I've been waiting!" I felt terrible as I explained what happened and watched as disappointment appeared on all their faces.

It is truly gratifying to know that they really respond to using this type of technology as therapy but sad as I am not able to replace it on my own.

This Ipad will help restore normalcy to our therapy sessions and will create many more communication opportunities for years to come. Its amazing how this one tool can help meet so many different needs and help me treat more then 50 students. My students and I appreciate your thoughtfulness and consideration for our request. Thank you very much!
