My Students

We love reading, but we lost our classroom library to hurricane Sandy! We would like to have a library of leveled readers available for classroom literacy activities and for independent reading at home. Many students also lost books and materials from flooding in their homes.

Our school building was flooded, and heating oil emptied into the flooded basement, creating a hazardous zone.

Our school was also relocated, and we have no materials. There are 300 students in Grades K-3 and we have very limited reading materials to work with. We need a basic leveled reading set to conduct literacy programs for our students. Our school building has been closed due to damage and are relocated to due to Hurricane Sandy. We are not expected to return until sometime in 2013.

My Project

Studies show that the best way to teach kids to read is to pair them up with the books that are at their instructional or independent reading level. That is why my class needs a classroom leveled reading library and a mobile storage cart. These items would allow my students to read and comprehend various types of texts, introducing them to different types of information and vocabulary they can understand, allowing them to gain background knowledge that will help them move on to higher level texts.

We need to meet the needs of our students and provide a diversity of leveled readers.
