My Students

I teach at a Title I school in west Harlem. Many of the students receive free lunch. Our students come from various cultural backgrounds, and have various learning needs. Our grade is unique since it contains an ICT (Integrated co-teaching) class and a general education class. We also have quite a few English language learners.

Many of the students in our 7th grade classes have not had educational and life experieces beyond their neighborhood or beyond New York City, and so we seek out life-changing opportunities for them when they arise.

My Project

We have been given the amazing opportunity to take our 7th grade students on a trip to the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut! The students will be participating in a 45-minute class about water pollution. This program will teach them about how humans littering on land affects how pollution gets into the ocean. They will learn how this pollution affects plant and animal life in the ocean. Students will be interacting with a demonstration model, and will come up with creative ways that they can use to help solve this pollution problem.

"The ocean: it stirs the heart, inspires the imagination, and brings eternal joy to the soul!"- Anonymous.

In addition to taking a class, students will be going on an interactive hands-on tour around the aquarium. They will be given the opportunity to touch sharks, sting rays, and jellies! They will discover the blue lobster! There is also a fascinating new jelly exhibit, in which many types of jellies are showcased; everything from sea nettles to upside-down jellies. Have you ever seen an upside-down jelly?! Well our students haven't either, and these will be new and exciting creatures for them to discover and explore!

This trip is a life-changing opportunity for our students. It will continue to inspire the children who are already considering careers when they grow up in various natural and life sciences, and ignite curiosity in those that haven't even considered it yet. Even if they are not considering a career in the sciences, this trip will help to give our students memories and experiences that will last a lifetime!

Thank you for supporting our students in their quest for exploration and knowledge, and exposing them to the larger world outside!
