My Project

A middle school lesson plan that integrates African-American hairstyles, entrepreneurship, and creativity using the materials I am asking Donors Choose to help supply.

Lesson Plan: “Creative Crowns: African-American Hairstyles & Beauty Entrepreneurship.” This lesson will inspire creativity, celebrate culture, and introduce students to entrepreneurship in a meaningful way.

Discussion Questions:

• Why are hairstyles important in African-American culture?

• What are some traditional and modern African-American hairstyles?

• What does it mean to be an entrepreneur?

Mini-Lesson:

• Show images or short video clips highlighting African-American hairstyles (e.g., braids, locs, twists, afros).

• Discuss the role of Black-owned beauty salons in the community.

• Explain entrepreneurship basics: branding, products, and customer service.

2. Hands-On Activity: “Salon Design & Hairstyling” (40 minutes)

Step 1: Create a Hair Model (20 min)

• Give each student a piece of cardboard as their “client’s head.”

• Use black yarn to represent hair, attaching it to the cardboard.

• Add pony beads to create braids, twists, or other styles.

Step 2: Salon Entrepreneurship (20 min)

• Each student or group designs their own African-American beauty salon.

• Name the salon and write it in bold letters with Sharpies.

• Decide what services they offer (braids, locs, wigs, hair products, etc.).

• Write a short pitch: Why should people come to their salon?

3. Presentation & Reflection (15–20 minutes)

• Students present their salon ideas and hair creations.

• Classmates provide positive feedback.

• Reflection questions:

• What did you learn about African-American hairstyles and culture?

• What challenges do beauty entrepreneurs face?

• How does creativity help in business?

Extensions:

• Invite a local Black business owner or hairstylist to speak.

• Research and create a business budget for a salon.

• Design logos and marketing materials.
