A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Teaching children to read and to love books and stories is one of my greatest joys as an educator. As a life-long avid reader myself, I strive to make sure that all of my kindergarten students gain the important foundational reading skills that will enable them to also be life-long readers. I love introducing them to the various genres of children's literature, and it gives me great satisfaction to see their interest in words and books grow as the school year progresses.
I teach full day kindergarten at a K-2, suburban, elementary school where many of the students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunch.
Our student population is racially diverse, and approximately 30% of our students identify as Asian, African American, or Hispanic/Latino. Approximately 8% of our students are English Language Learners. Our school participates in the state's Project Open Choice, which allows urban students to attend public schools in suburban towns. Many of my students face difficult home-life circumstances, but all of them are eager to learn, make friends, and feel that they are a valued part of our class.
My Project
In a COVID-19 kindergarten classroom, safety comes first! As their teacher, I need to ensure that we are all following appropriate social distancing guidelines. To do so, students cannot share materials as they did in a pre-COVID-19 environment; students need their own set of supplies for learning.
These book bins will enable me to supply each student with the items he/she needs to learn, and the materials will be at their fingertips when they need them.
The heavy duty bins are large enough to fit books, writing paper, a white board, markers, and so forth. After the threat of COVID-19 passes, they can be reused to organize and expand our classroom library - a true win/win situation!
The plastic sleeves can hold lined writing paper, math problem solving sheets, and much more. Lastly, the math white boards will streamline math lessons, and each student will have their own dedicated board to use. No more sharing boards and potential germs!
