This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm being asked to describe what I love about my students and what makes them special, and as cliché as it sounds, that's difficult to put into words. My children think critically about the world and care deeply for one another. They are intelligent, ambitious, free-thinking individuals. They love one another and support each other's growth, despite the differences and obstacles we face throughout the school year. Each year is another opportunity to construct another beautiful family, and each year that is what the children do.

My students deserve the best education, a loving community, and most of all, tools to maintain their health.

However, I work in a Title I school in the Bronx that already receives minimal funding. Many of my children live in temporary housing and below the poverty line. DonorsChoose.org is an opportunity to level the playing field for them and provide them with the resources to empower themselves and each other. This empowerment leads to children who care about their learning, their achievements, and their future. Please help me provide a platform for their success.

My Project

This project is unlike any other I've created before. While I typically request books or materials for projects, these basic school supplies may be the most important request I've yet to make. These items will give each student an individual set of materials. Our class normally shares pencils, highlighters, erasers, Post-its, all from one resource station. They take what they need, then put it back for the next class when they are done, passing them along from student to student. However, given the situation, this is no longer feasible. Students can no longer gather in groups to share a set of highlights, and they cannot collectively assemble around a resource station in the classroom.

Children need an individual set of basic supplies to maintain a healthy environment, where they feel safe to learn.

However, many families are facing economic hardship, and it's more difficult than ever to ask for basic necessities. These materials are simply the essential tools that give each child the comfort to read, write, calculate, and inquire without the worry of spreading a virus. Each box will be individually labeled, and students will not be allowed to share or exchange materials. If at any point we are sent to be teaching remotely again, then the materials will be given to the students to use in their own homes.
