My Students

Do you remember how you learned to cross the street or how you made friends? My students have not yet learned to do that nor many other basic safety and social skills.

My students are mild to moderately mentally retarded high school teenagers with hearts of gold.

They love to learn, but some do not know how to read at all and a few read between a pre-kindergarten to 1st grade level. So they are VISUAL learners who process lessons when shown LOTS of visual aids such as pictures or when we model for them. Our school is an occupational training center, which means we teach life skills to prepare students for work and make them as independent as possible when they graduate.

My Project

In my class they are learning life skills such as identifying safety signs, learning to cross the street and learning social skills. By having flashcards and workbooks on the topics of safety and social skills, I would be able to teach my students how to make friends properly, how to get along with others and identify bathroom, exit and caution signs. The flashcards would be used as a class activity to review what we have learned but also providing them with the visual aids they need to better grasp the concepts.

By supporting my project you would be the key to providing my students with the basic life skills to be safe in the community and to getting them one step closer to a more independent life.
