My Students

My students are seventh and eighth graders from the community of Brownsville in Brooklyn. At least 95% of them reside in the city-funded housing also known as the Projects. My students are resilient, determined, and audacious. They do not allow their environment to discourage them from dreaming of achieving their goals.

This past year and a half has been extremely challenging to them because the majority of them did not have the luxury of going outside in backyards to feel safe during Covid restrictions.

There was even extreme fear of getting on elevators to go outside even if it was a moment.

Although this fear still exists they are determined to come back to the school building to get the complete experience of the education so that they can be fully equipped to continue to fight for their dreams and their futures.

My Project

My students will need the plexiglass shields to focus their learning and not whether they will contract Covid.

Most of the students come from environments that involve them worrying about their safety daily, I want my students to feel that they have a safe learning environment when they enter my classroom, and having the plexiglass shields would provide them with that level of comfort.

The students will be able to work in groups for collaborative lessons. They will be able to create projects and not be subject to working in isolation.
