This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello friends, I am an elementary and middle school speech-language therapist in New York City. All of the students I service have speech and/or language difficulties.

My students are resilient, curious, creative, and playful; they take turns playing games with their peers, learn to make sounds, create new words and sentences, imagine real and make-believe stories, answer and ask a lot of different questions, listen to and read books, and love to learn.

My students are all sweet, motivated, and very funny PK-6th grade students with a range of learning disabilities including ADHD, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, auditory processing disorder, and speech and language delay. They work extremely hard to overcome their challenges and are the most resilient little people you will ever meet. When COVID-19 hit NYC we all pushed through all challenges and went remote! This school year still looks very different for our students and it is our job to make sure they are successful and happy no matter what. They need additional outlets and specific materials for learning, to keep their attention to task, reinforce their behaviors positively, engage them, and expand their skills.

My Project

I learned a lot about what would help my students succeed during speech and language teletherapy, and I know what they need when they are in school! Learning in front of a screen is very hard, they need to better hear me (with a microphone headset) and stay motivated. With the use of a document camera and OSMO activities, they can virtually see and "use" the same and motivating materials (books, toys, workbooks) they are used to in school. To increase safety measures, keeping everything separated in a pouch for each student will allow me to easily sanitize materials for next time use. We need more white boards, markers, folders, crayons, scissors etc. so that students can have their own set to take home if there is a school closure.

Please help my students get the individualized supplies they need at school and the tools to make remote learning/ teletherapy more engaging and organized!
