Mercedes is an excellent student who has worked very hard in helping to develop a culture of musicianship and high quality work ethic. I have worked hard to provide opportunities for her this year because she's thirsty for a cause.
I asked Mercedes to think about something that would help our classroom learning environment. Our program is brand new as of last year and we do not have storage for the instruments which causes the room to be in disarray sometimes. Our room is small, so efficient use of space is a priority. She suggested that we find a way to store our instruments so that they take up less space when they are not being used. I loved it and had a discussion with her on what our options were. This wonderful student want to help see the program develop here in our school district over time. I'm so proud of her initiative and desire to help our school.
Mercedes comes from an Economically disadvantaged home. She's going to have to fight for what she desires. She will have to work hard and to be a problem solver with a growth mindset in order to be able to be successful. When I talk about her to my colleagues, I call her "Ms. Tenacity" because "girl, you ain't gonna tell my girl she can't do something!" This project will help her to learn to be philanthropic and raise money for something she is passionate about, she will have opportunities to use her writing skills and to help give back to an organization that she holds dear. Mercedes is a student that I want to work hard for because she has such great potential, such a hopeful future, and desire to succeed. I'm confident that if she is provided opportunities, she will "be someone." This girl is going to go far in life and I want to help her realize her dreams!
In Their Own Words
I would like to help Ms. Azevedo get storage cabinets for our instruments. Our school district has purchased very good instruments for us to play, but we have no way to store them in our room. Sometimes our classroom gets a little cluttered because it's a small room and the instruments get messy if they aren't put away neatly. I think it helps us learn better when the room is clean and organized. Our instruments will also last longer if they are taken care of.
I work hard at school to set a positive example for my peers. Ms. A gives me leadership opportunities where possible and I want to do everything I can to help make things better for the future. I want to help Ms. A make the program better and I think obtaining these storage cabinets will help our learning environment. I plan to help advertise this project around the community and to advocate for the program when I can.
I hope that I can help make music in Ravenswood better for the future. This project request will help to keep our room organized and hopefully help to promote a positive learning environment as well as protect our instruments for the long term. Ms. A and all of the teachers in our school district really try to make us equal to the students in wealthier neighborhoods. Ms. A said "these are what other schools have" so I think we should have them too. Equality in education is very important to me.
