Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a school counselor to some amazing young women. My school is a Title I school with many of our young girls coming from low-income households. Despite what may go on in the lives of these young women they are all rock stars. Our girls are driven and hungry for success. They strive for greatness and refuse to settle for mediocre. This year will be our first graduating class and 100% percent of our seniors are on track for graduation. The work they do is incredible.

Young people today are met with more pressure and stressors than one can imagine but our girls know how important it is to be successful.

I want to create a safe space for these girls to come and talk about what they are facing. I imagine a space where they feel relaxed, comfortable and at home. An oasis where they can let down their walls and find multiple entry points to stress relief. Our students work so hard and deserve a place to do just that.

My Project

My students love stress relief toys. Students with stress and anxiety benefit greatly with things they can fidget and play with. It often makes them feel more comfortable and open to talk. The Thinking Putty and Desk Sculpture are great at keeping hands busy and getting some nervous energy out. The punching toy is great for students with excess energy throughout the day or for students who are working through angry feelings.

Additionally, I am looking to stock the office with some essentials our students may need but don't know how to ask for.

Making things like soaps and toiletries available in baskets throughout the room will make them accessible to all. The baskets will also be used to store markers, colored pencils, coloring books and workbooks I keep around the office for students who want to draw or color as a calming activity.

The chairs and table will help to make the room feel more like home. The oils will help provide some aromatherapy. When students are in an environment where they are comfortable they are more likely to express the feelings they may have and feel safe enough to work through them.
