My Project

Transitioning from middle school to high school can be a challenge for scholars. These scholars are learning to navigate a new school and a different schedule from what they are used to. The scholars I serve who have mild/moderate learning disabilities are experiencing challenges because the school environment itself can be quite overwhelming for any incoming 9th-grade scholars. With meeting the classroom expectations, special needs scholars can also become overstimulated and need breaks.

Brain breaks are necessary for scholars to relax, regroup, and minimize overstimulation.

As educators, we should be able to provide a space specifically for them to gather their thoughts, study, and take a brain break when necessary. By providing this space, scholars will most definitely increase academic performance. This space should be the opposite of the typical classroom which may be crowded with hard, uncomfortable desks and bright lighting. The space should be warm, welcoming, comfortable, and inviting with soft lamp lighting, soft chairs, and a comfy rug for peers to sit together as they choose to unwind, study together, or relax for a few minutes before they are expected to face the overwhelming challenges of high school. This space will also include a small bookcase for entertaining periodicals and books.

Research suggests that brain breaks can help improve focus, productivity, and learning. What better way than to give such deserving students a space with a beautiful rug that displays positive character traits, soft lighting, cute, comfy chairs, and a bookcase? Please consider helping my scholars improve their thinking and learning by giving them a safe space for a brain break!
