My Project

My class is comprised of New York City Public Schools District 75 students in Queens. They are children with special needs, autism, and other health impairments from diverse backgrounds. They are in a setting that addresses their cognitive, social-emotional, adaptive, communication and sensory needs.

Children with special needs often deal with challenges due to various stimuli that may overwhelm them and trigger problem behaviors.

Providing a safe space that would help them learn more about their feelings and different coping strategies is essential in a self-contained special education classroom like mine. It helps prevent or deescalate problem behaviors. It also avoids frequent disruptions that inadvertently interfere with the learning of other students, due to these behaviors.

Help me create a nurturing learning environment that promotes emotional development, self-regulation, and management of sensory needs. Tactile boards, chew/ sensory toys, weighted blanket, sensory bins, as well as behavior visuals and emotions chart will help my students learn and thrive throughout the school year.
