Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a perfect example of the "at-risk" students that create the LAUSD population. All of the families in my classroom are classified as socio-economically disadvantaged and qualify for free lunch. The majority of the class (78%) are classified as ELs and, according to Dibels BOY scores, all but one of my students are performing a way-below benchmark. Now that we’re learning from home, my students need extra tools to support their learning!

My students are funny, eager to learn, and motivated!

They do not let their disadvantages discourage them from learning about the world around them. They are aware of their faults, however, they understand that they can only move forward. They are not afraid to make mistakes because they know that it is a step towards learning.

My Project

As a teacher for the LAUSD, I was glad to know that the superintendent did the cautious thing by choosing to stay with distance learning for the Fall semester. Nothing has been set in stone yet, the district and the union are working hard to reach an agreement about returning back to the physical classrooms.

Since there is still no vaccine and studies have shown that COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted the population of color that makes up the LAUSD students, I want to make sure my students are protected when we go back to the classroom.

As a first-grade teacher, I know my students are still learning about physical space and boundaries. Asking them to keep their distance and sit in designated locations will be hard to become accustomed to. I want to provide them with the tools they will need to help this transition be done safely. The hula hoops will help make the abstract concept of personal space more concrete. The spot markers will help them know where to stand in the classroom so they can give their classmates enough space. The dividers will provide an extra layer of security for the students to participate in class and see each other. Finally, the pencil cases are to help keep their materials organized and to avoid the confusion of mixing materials.
