This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Integrated Co-Teaching class consists of twenty-six students. Six of the students have an individual education plan (IEP). The school is located in Crown Heights Brooklyn. The class reflects the cultural and linguistic diversity of the neighborhood. My students vary in their reading abilities. Although struggling, they are striving to learn and become better readers.
The classroom physical environment affects morale and student learning in my low-income, and Title One school.
Eighty percent of the students at my school receive free lunch. In spite of their needs, the environment is one layer that affects their learning.
My Project
The library in my classroom looks beautiful and seems functional with the brightly decorated bins and variety of books. However, the bookcases are wobbly and unsafe from years of use. The bookcases are held together by glue, nails, tape and brackets.
Whenever a student touches a shelf on a bookcase it falls down, which creates a constant distraction.
So, I have to remove the bins and place them on the tables in order for students to book shop safely.
The new bookcases would give the students independence in going book shopping, as well as peace of mind that the bookcases will not collapse on them.
