Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are taking Principles of STEM, Robotics, and attending an after school STEM program. Although my students come from a variety of backgrounds, including a large portion of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, the hands-on experience keeps them engaged and learning.

One of my goals as a STEM educator is to integrate the STEM field throughout various topics of study.

This involves looking at how STEM impacts other areas of life: history, civics, art, antibullying, social emotional well being, etc. In order to minimize the effects of social distancing, we are looking for ways to keep my students engaged in real world applications of STEM.

The STEM field is largely geared towards men, so it is my desire to create an environment that encourages young women to be involved with and successful in STEM. Through innovative projects and STEM awareness, I am hoping to balance the ratio of male to female students in STEM fields. Also, with such a high percentage of EL students and low socioeconomic students, laboratory experience and hands-on learning is an excellent way to enrich their education.

My Project

Students will use the Sphero RVR robots to learn the basics of robotics. This system can teach students the basics of coding while also encouraging students to engineer their own designs. Students will be able to connect controllers and other hardware to make these robots fully autonomous. This allows the students to scaffold the learning from beginner all the way to advanced makers. This wide impact will largely impact target populations like our EL students and those planning on going into STEM.

Right now there is a discrepancy between the engagement of males and females in robotics.

The Sphero RVR is described as increasing engagement in female students. Robotics is predominantly utilized by males in the classroom. During this unit, students will investigate a person that has impacted society through robotics. They will be encouraged to use the IF/THEN collection that showcases many of the females in the robotics field.

Their research will then be presented to the class or create a video biography of said person. Hopefully students will see how women like Ayana Howard and Vandi Verma have excelled in robotics. Although all of our robotics students will engage in this project, my hope is that it will help encourage women to enter the STEM field and realize their potential!
