My Students

Have you ever experienced the excitement in a student's face when he/she hears that they are about to do a science experiment? I have, and I absolutely do NOT want to disappoint these rural kids here in Southern Louisiana!

The students in this area are generally from low-income, hard-working families.

They do not get the opportunities that most urban kids have, and they rarely travel outside their small town area. The one quality that endears me to teaching at M. Elementary is the fact that these kids really appreciate their education and they respect their teachers; something that's pretty hard to find these days. I love helping them reach their goals, especially helping girls realize their potential in science. Most of the young girls in junior high around this area need all the encouragement they can get to pursue technical careers and get a college degree. I am trying to create a spark and love for science in the critical junior high years for all students!

My Project

With these microscopes for student use and the one digital microscope for whole class instruction, I will open up the world of microbiology for my students. They can see first hand some of the changes that will take place in the plants and microscopic animal cells that can only be viewed with a microscope. M. Elementary has NEVER had microscopes, so I feel it is imperative to get these for our school. A true science education cannot be taught without sturdy student microscopes. I chose the cordless variety due to the fact that our school is old and I don't have many outlets in the room. The cords would be a safety hazard and could result in a student tripping and breaking the equipment.

You can only imagine what their faces will look like when they walk into their classroom to find a new science teacher AND new microscopes!

This is the momentum I need to get them fired up and ready to learn! All students deserve to learn science where the teacher presents them with adequate equipment and lets them use their own natural inquiry and curiosity to find answers to the wonders of our Earth.
