This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are brave, intelligent, and they want better for themselves. At times, they may become discouraged and wary of their futures, however, they are always open to sound advice and do their best to adhere to it. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to have taught and grown with these students over these past few years. They are truly inspiring and encourage me to be the best that I can so the way I carry myself will always serve as a positive example for them.

Being in an inner city school in Miami, set in the heart of a community that is riddled with violence and hopelessness, many of our students look to sports as a positive outlet and safe haven.

They participate in sports to escape their home environments, maintain physical wellness, and at times these teams are the only family that some of the students have. Through everything they go through outside of school, they still find time and the drive to push through whatever obstacle is thrown at them. It is their resiliency and tenacity that I admire most and I see nothing but great things in their futures.

My Project

Since I have been at this school and part of the Girls Track and Field program, students have not been sufficiently prepared for competition because the majority of them cannot afford anything outside of the school issued uniforms.

It is my hope that with these leggings, it will incite more buy-in into the program and it will encourage them to warm-up with the proper gear to best prepare them for competition.

Additionally, I feel that with matching gear, it encourages team cohesiveness and contributes to a family-like atmosphere. Coming from successful Track and field programs on the high school and collegiate levels, something as simple as "tights" can make a world of difference for an impressionable athlete's competitive state. It is a worthwhile investment.
