Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle school students from the South Bronx. They are passionate and dedicated to their education. My students are loyal and full of love, especially towards those that have their back. Regardless of the trauma and poverty they experience, they are kids looking of someone to be present for them in their lives. I am honored that they trust me enough to disclose their experience,and allow me to guide them through they middle school experience.

Many of my students express that their rumbling stomachs make it difficult to focus on their task in class.

I have witnessed one of my students refocus, as soon as, their hunger was addressed.

My Project

My students need healthy bars and snack to keep them focused on their academics and assist them in keeping their emotion balanced. I am their school social worker seeking assistance in funding of healthy snacks for my hungry students.

You may ask, "Why the focus on their hunger?"One of the simplest solution is asking, "Have you eaten?" Can immediately de-escalate a crisis.

I consistently have students coming to my office asking for snacks at all times of the day. I have dealt with many crisis in classroom because students have express their hunger. Some of my students have adult responsibility, such as dropping their siblings to school, so they are unable or are late to breakfast.

The introduction of healthy snacks might be a first lesson for healthy eating for many of my students. Since many of my students are overweight, I will be able to teach them alternatives to their unhealthy snacks.

I would like to have a variety of snacks in my office to provide a quick energy boost to my students to get them back on the path to emotional and academic success.
