This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Bronx students remind me of myself when I was in middle school. They are getting to know themselves and the world around them through adolescent eyes. They are energetic, enthusiastic and full of creative ideas.

As 7th and 8th graders, they come to me with non-blank slates that should be added to, not erased.

They are dramatic yet resilient, both confident and insecure, and lovable each in their own way. I love letting their ideas take life in my classroom.

Many people think the Bronx is a tough place to grow up but we know that it is a good thing to be strong in a tough world.

My Project

Did you know that the secret to solving the Rubik's cube is actually algebra? Sure it is! As long as you reverse every change that was made, the cube will be solved. That's algebraic thinking at it's foundation. Using inverse operations is a complex idea to many students so this hand-on task gives it meaning. I have them "mess-up" the cube wile keeping track of their changes. They use any method they like. Then, surprise! I ask them to fix it. After the shocked looks leaves their face, they realize that they have the answer right in front of them.
