Rounding Out Our Literature Circle Library

My students need multiple copies of books, for book clubs that will be included as part of reader's workshop. Some of these books are books on CD and Spanish language.

My Students

I hope that as teachers invite kids to pick their own books and talk freely in book clubs, children will feel welcome to make personal and even peculiar choices, to find the way books work for them, to make reading a special part of their interior and exterior lives, forever. - Harvey Daniels

My students are a diverse group who attend an urban public school.

They come from amazingly diverse backgrounds ethnically, socioeconomically, an in terms of their learning abilities. Our school stands out from many other public schools because of our progressive social studies-based curriculum. From block building in PreK - 2nd grade to visiting Congress in 5th grade, our kids learn through hands-on experiences and trips. Our principal fights to keep class size relatively small, so that our children have the greatest opportunity to learn.

My Project

Last year, my team teachers and I launched book clubs, based on the book Literature Circles, by Harvey Daniels. We were so excited by the results of these book clubs that we can't wait to launch partner reading and book clubs again this year. The only thing we're missing is multiple copies of books! The Daniels book club model is so great because it allows children to pick which books they would like to read, from a wide array of choices. If I get this grant funded, I will be able to offer my class these many choices of books, from various eras, authors and genres. Some especially cool things about these book clubs are that they don't stay static. During the year, kids get a chance to work with all different students. This is great for community building. I have included Spanish language and CD forms of books, too, so that children's book choices are not dictated solely by their reading levels or English Language Learner status.

I can't wait to do book clubs again this year.

If we get this grant funded, my class will have the added bonus of having a vast array of book choices. I can't think of a better motivator!
