My Students

My students are a very diverse collection of kids from a high poverty community in the Bronx. Last year, I was able to open their minds to the joys of reading that show them the safety, beauty, and ability to lose themselves or find their stories in the lines of a book. I want to keep doing this.

My kids come from a rough area in the Bronx, where gangs and fights are constantly looking to get them off track.

Students have told me they enjoy my class because I expose them to books they can lose themselves in and inspire them to do more with themselves than the streets request of them. Our school is one in six on a high school campus in the Bronx, and my classroom demographic is mostly students of color. But we find common grounds across cultures in the human experience discussed in our texts.

My Project

I am requesting a number of popular series to ensure my students have texts they are familiar with, as well as options to enjoy a new genre or author. Last year, I could not keep some of these books on my shelves and students would trade them from person to person, which was lovely except for the fact I might never see one of my books into a whole group of friends had read it. I want to continue this enthusiasm for reading.

Reading is an escape that is needed for these kids.

Many of them have lower reading levels because they refuse to read the traditional texts they were forced to read. Many students last year told me that they had never read as many books in their in entire life as they read in my class. I would love to keep this desire for reading going.
