Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My second grade students want to become excellent readers but need motivating, interesting material they will take home to share with family and friends. I teach second grade at a public school in an urban area. Students at my school come from predominately low-income, minority families. Most of them do not speak English at home and have few books in their houses for them to practice reading. Their reading ability suffers from low English vocabulary skills, limited background knowledge, and lack of opportunity to read at home.

Everyone knows practice makes perfect. The best way to ensure kids will practice reading and talk about what they read with their family or friends is to provide them with material that interests them. Our school district requires us to spend most of our class time on reading and math instruction, leaving us with limited time for science and social studies. Children love these subjects are are always excited when we have time to spend learning about animals or famous Americans. Due to their families' poverty level, most of my students do not have the same life experiences of other children their age. Many have never been to a zoo, aquarium, or museum. They are not learning about animals or our country's history from their parents. I want to provide my second graders with an engaging reading source that focuses on science, social studies, and current events. I want them to be able to take it home to share with their families.

Weekly Readers are weekly news magazines for children. The articles are written with each grade level in mind so content is aligned with educational standards. In addition, content is age appropriate and focuses on topics in science and social studies. This year some of the issues include articles about the Olympics, oceans, animals, Martin Luther King, Jr., and a special issue about the presidential election.

You can help my students improve not only their reading ability, but their interest in reading. Weekly Readers will give them a wider variety of reading material on topics that will aid in their acquisition of English vocabulary and general knowledge.
