Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help me making reading a fun and accessible activity for my students! I teach juniors and seniors in an urban high school. Many of my students speak English as a second language and do not read at grade level.

Many of my students do not read the assigned texts because the books do not interest them. The characters do not look like them or speak like them, and they do not have experiences like them, so they lose interest. I am trying to turn my students into life-long learners, but that is very difficult to do when they despise reading.

I sincerely want my students to enjoy reading. But it is difficult to do that now because the only texts that would interest my students are texts they would have to read outside of class since they aren't on our book lists. Very few of my students have ever read a book for pleasure, so they are not likely to pick up such a book. Most literacy experts agree that Literature Circles are one of the most effective ways to engage reluctant readers, and after having such success with them last year, I'd like to continue them with more students this year. The students will be given a list of books that have been cited by various literacy publications as appropriate for reluctant readers of all levels. They will then choose the book that most interests them, and they will form a group with the other students interested in that book as well. They will then "apply" for different jobs within their Literature Circle and they will work on analyzing the texts within their groups. I will monitor discussion and activities during the Literature Circles, but most of the work will be student-driven. By empowering students & making them integral members of their peer groups, they will learn that reading can be fun.

With your help, my students can read the following books in our Literature Circles: "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier," "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian," "Life of Pi," "Twilight," and "Into the Wild." Your help with this project will ensure that my students are exposed to books that actually appeal to them. This will improve their attitudes towards reading and analyzing literature, and they will be more open to examining other texts and reading books on their own. Thank you for your support!
