My Project

We would like to establish a school garden that enhances students’ understanding of healthy eating, sustainability, and environmental stewardship while providing hands-on learning experiences.

Roots to Shoots will create a vibrant school garden that serves as a living classroom for students.

The project will promote the benefits of gardening, nutrition, and local food systems, encouraging students to engage with nature and learn about the food they consume.

This project will address the needs of students of all ages,

teachers and staff, and parents and community members.

We will identify a suitable area on school grounds for the garden (e.g., unused land, courtyard), involve students in designing the garden layout, choosing plants (vegetables, herbs, flowers), and planning for seasonal crops. We will organize a community day for soil preparation and initial planting, using compost and organic materials. Students will then create a schedule to water, weed, and maintain the garden, rotating responsibilities among classes.

We plan to develop lesson plans that integrate gardening with subjects like science (plant biology), math (measuring growth), and art (creating garden signs). Part of our experience will be to visit local farms or farmer’s markets to reinforce concepts learned in the garden.

We can partner with local farms to supply fresh produce for school meals and educate students about local food systems.

We will organize regular taste-testing events where students sample produce from the garden and local farms, promoting healthy eating habits.

The garden will be a great opportunity for us to invite parents and community members to participate in garden activities, fostering a sense of community ownership and involvement.

We can even host an annual harvest festival to celebrate the garden’s bounty, featuring local food vendors, games, and educational booths.
