Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Garden Club Advisory was established in 2015 by a group of students in South Los Angeles who were inspired to reclaim an abandoned space in their community and turn it into a flourishing garden. Five years later, and the garden has become a place of hope, beauty, resistance, strength, and tranquility.

My students enjoy getting their hands dirty, learning about gardening, spending time outside of the classroom, and reveling in the beauty of nature.

Despite all the challenges of 2020, my brilliant and determined group of thirty Garden Club Advisory students want to continue to learn how bring about positive change through gardening to not only their community, but into their homes during distance learning.

My Project

Students join the Garden Club Advisory to get outside, to learn about gardening techniques, and to advocate for beautiful community spaces. Maintaining our school garden was a calming time for my students, a time for students to look away from their screens, a time to get out of the classroom, and connect to the earth and nature's cycles. Because of COVID-19, our school has been closed since early March and students have sorely missed not only the time spent in our school garden, but the sheer joy of spending time outdoors growing nutritious foods.

Supplying students with the materials to grow their own herb gardens at home will re-energize their passion for gardening during distance learning.

With the containers, soil, and seeds for growing fresh herbs provided to all my students, I can continue my garden curriculum during distance learning. Students will have the unique opportunity of designing their container layout, document their observations and growth data, and share out their progress during our daily virtual meetings. The hands-on gardening will aid in learning and exploring concepts in soil science, horticulture, and other organic agriculture methods.

Furthermore and perhaps most importantly, my students will get to enjoy the fruits of their labor and share their herbs with their families once grown. This is important for two reasons 1) COVID-19 has led to many hardships for my students' families during this time, so by growing their own food, a small weight can be lifted and 2) South Los Angeles is a food desert (an area lacking access to wholesome fresh foods) and planting an herb garden would be an act of resistance.

Please help my students start their own herb gardens so that they may cultivate joy and strength during these unprecedented times!
