I am writing this letter as a fourth grade teacher trying to bring science alive for my students through a well developed year round unit called “Root Shoots and Healthy Eating,” These science unit was developed to meet the needs of my fourth grade science curriculum, as well as to promote, “Science Inquiry” for hands on learning, prepare them for the middle school, and to promote students as “future Gardeners.”
I have 24 eager and creative children who truly have a love of Science. Every lesson developed is interactive as well as educational. In addition to predicting outcomes, analyzing and comprehension questions. They will be using math in every lesson, such as measuring, data collection, and observation. I feel Science needs to come alive for all!!!
We are a Title I School with 90% free and reduced lunches.
It is my hope to bring children/families together with hydroponics gardening as well as teaching a healthy lifestyle.
My Project
My objective for this hydroponic gardening is to have an interactive long-term investigation that will teach students the importance of water conservation in a real world situation. Students will understand the benefits of an alternative method to the traditional gardening when water resources are limited and soil is contaminated.
Our school is built on very dry and rocky land and most of the students know we cannot grow edible produce in the soil on school grounds.
Students will research hydroponic growing and how it benefits the environment. Fourth grade (the grade level I teach) will focus on water quality, water conservation and the affects humans have on the environment when water resources are not managed properly. Students will maintain all aspects of the garden and educate their families and local community about the benefits of hydroponics. They will also share the benefits of tasting healthy foods grown within the classroom.
