Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a speech-language pathologist, I work with middle school students in grades 6-8 who face a range of communication, academic, and cognitive disabilities. These students have diverse strengths and unique challenges, so my space needs to be as adaptable and supportive as they are. To start the year strong, I’m looking to add new furniture and materials to create an environment where every student can thrive.

Imagine trying to focus while your fingers get stuck between desks, you forget things inside them, or you’re so close to the person next to you that you can practically hear their thoughts!

That’s a typical session for my students. The large table will provide each student with ample space to spread out and work comfortably, without the risk of desk mishaps. Plus, who doesn’t love having their own area to focus on their work?

My students are the kind who need to wiggle, stretch, or stand to keep their brains engaged. The chair and desk enhancements will allow my students to move or stand as needed without disrupting others and the flow of lessons. And those calming strips are like little magic wands, helping students stay grounded when things get overwhelming. Pair them with a timer, and we’re on our way to more focused, independent learners.

My goal is to create a space that’s organized and empowering. We’re adding a big calendar to learn how to plan ahead (because being surprised by due dates is not fun!). I’ll be printing out supports like planners they can take home. My students are incredible—despite their challenges with reading, writing, and staying regulated and organized, they have so much potential and a desire to succeed. This project will help them tap into that potential by giving them the tools and space they need to thrive.
