My Students

Have you ever been to the zoo to see all the wonderful animals? Have you ever been to the Aquarium to experience the mysterious sea creatures? My preschool students have not and I don't know if they will be given these opportunities to learn about the different animals of our world.

My school is in the middle of one of the lowest income areas in the San Fernando Valley.

Most come to school wearing the same clothes they had on the day before. The fact that these hard working immigrant parents are trying to give their children the experience of early childhood education is extremely commendable. Most of my parents work three or four jobs to get food on the table. Unfortunately simple family experiences that seem normal for a four year old to have outside of the classroom is not their reality. They don't get to the zoo, museums, or aquariums as much as I would love for them to be able to go. They are sweet kids and soak up any lesson I give them like little sponges. They are enjoying preschool to the fullest and progressing rapidly.

My Project

I have requested resources that cover the foundations and measurements that are required for my preschool students to be exposed to through out the school year. I am creating an animal thematic unit and will be covering Farm, Pets, Zoo, and Ocean life. I will be introducing my students to animals and their environments. We will be making a culminating book at the end of each mini unit to illustrate all of the facts that we have learned in our different units. These books will be on display during open house. My students will be gaining vocabulary skills, math skills, and letter knowledge. They will be participating in dramatic play and psychomotor activities. Most of my students will be learning about these different animals for the first time and I would love for it to leave a lasting impression and spark their interest and joy of learning new things.

My project is so important because this is the base for their future education experience.

Prior knowledge is an important pillar for my second language learners to depend on through out their educational careers.
