Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy! We are currently running a reading competition in the speech room, with over a third of the speech students racing to complete the most outside books to win a special prize at the end of the year! While my library has a variety of titles ranging from Shakespeare to Harry Potter to The Perks of Being a Wallflower, it has recently come to my attention that there is a genre that's missing that would get MANY more students involved in the reading race: ROMANCE!

Romance novels are among the most popular books checked out in school libraries, yet my collection is lacking in this category!

Many of my students, especially those who struggle to find books that truly interest them, have expressed a desire for engaging, age appropriate romance novels. Adding these books will not only foster a love of reading, but also help students develop empathy, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking skills as they explore different perspectives and relationships through literature.

By funding this project, you will provide my students with books they are excited to read and foster outside reading, which is a huge predictor of linguistic and literacy success. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create and bolster student academic achievement, which will in turn help them live bright futures! Thank you for helping me bring the magic of storytelling and love of literature into my students' lives!
