My Students

If you enter my classroom, you will see a diverse group of students building practical math skills to use in the classroom and out. You will hear many accents, as a third of my students are English language learners. You might even smell the leftovers from the free lunch and breakfast all of my students receive. What you won't hear is that most of my students face poverty at home. You won't see that many of them have overcome unimaginable obstacles. You will see the joy of learning; you will hear the effort and work we put in every day, despite what we go through.

My Project

My corner room is lovely with bright natural light and two full walls of windows. However, it means that I have little board space for instruction or wall space for anchor charts and word walls. In math, while back in person learning, I am trying to reduce the amount of virtual work during class. Kinesthetic learners thrive when materials are written and concrete. They need to see, feel, touch or manipulate to learn. They are my students who have struggled the most.

Learning math was especially difficult virtually; we are trying to get back to a more traditional approach and maximizing our learning by instructing without technology.

Sometimes students just need to put a pencil on paper, and see a teacher modeling work on the board. I need more room to provide examples, references, and instruction when working with my students.
