My Students

Students in my classroom grow in an environment of engineering, creativity, and interpersonal dynamics. The students learn the joys and breakthroughs of designing and programming while working in small groups. The students learn to work in teams to achieve specific goals and grow from there.

The students I work with are curious about the world they live in and have a high interest in being makers.

They are sports stars, academic decathletes, robotics engineers, musicians, artists and more. Over many years they have evolved to be a welcoming student body that accepts others as they are, and when they fall down in this or other missions, pick each other up and try again. My students come from a wide range of financial and social backgrounds and work together to create a school that is welcoming, high performing, and a fantastic place to work. The school provides a highly qualified mix of teachers who incorporate various teaching strategies to meet the needs of all students.

My Project

Students in our introductory computer science course will use these materials to learn the basics of robotics. In conjunction with other materials we already have access to, the Sphero will allow us to introduce robotics concepts, basic programming, and problem solving to students in our introductory computer science course as well as in our community engagement programs. We are working hard to bring in more female and minority students to a field that does not have much diversity. Using engaging tools such as the Sphero allows us to reduce and remove barriers that people imagine and create a space of wonder and excitement instead. Students will also learn from users around the world who participate in the Sphero educational community.

The future is full of technology we cannot even imagine.

The path to that future runs through our students and the visions they create in classes like these. Creating a classroom environment in which it is safe to explore, play and take risks is essential to the full development of our students. Creating that environment with well designed, durable products increases the opportunities for all students.
