My Students

Hate to sit still all day? It's true for students too, yet our school doesn't have any options for the students to choose from. Offering an exercise ball would be key to keeping a squirmy middle school student on task and learning. Ten exercise balls would give us options in the classroom.

This year I have classes of 28-31 seventh and eighth grade students.

All of the classrooms are crowded, with little room to move around the room. Our students are at school over eight hours a day, which makes their need for movement critical. The school has 724 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Our building was built in 1950, and the desks and chairs have not been replaced in the last twenty years.

My Project

Math requires lots of seat work, and the students try their best to stay on task and alert. Rotating in ten exercise balls as chairs for the students who have a hard time sitting still would allow struggling learners to become more focused, and the perpetual motion child to move without making the teacher or classmates crazier!

Students need to move and they need to learn math-what could be better than a combination of the two?

Offering an exercise ball serves as a reward for a determined learner as well as the solution for the student who needs movement that doesn't disrupt the class. I have an exercise ball my children bought me, and some days it is what keep me going!
