My Students

My school is a Title I, high-poverty, school in NY, with over 1,500 6th-8th grade students. Nearly 1/2 of my students have disabilities, and many are learning English as a second language. Hundreds of students participate in our after school programs.

Studies show that role-playing games foster social emotional learning.

I would like to extend this concept to our after school program, using role playing games to foster interpersonal activity between heterogeneous groups of students. In games like Dungeons and Dragons, students learn to collaborate with peers with different skills and interests to solve problems together. When I student approached me about organizing a club after school, I expected 6-10 students to attend. The 1st day, when it was time to wrap up, students did not want to leave. The next week, we had 30 students! (A week later, my ears are still ringing!)

Our role-playing game sessions are bringing together 6th grade students with disabilities and 8th grade honors students in an activity that promotes collaborative problem-solving, tolerance for differences, and noisy fun- everything education should be!

My Project

The current craze in education is Social Emotional Learning- managing emotions, setting goals, developing empathy for others.

One way to help children with their social emotional learning is through role-playing games, like Dungeons and Dragons.

In our after school program, we have students from every walk of life in our D & D club, having fun while working together on social problem-solving skills. With some miniatures to represent the players and the characters with whom they interact, and with some dry erase vinyl mats for map-drawing, the role-playing experience really comes alive for the children.

When a 7th grade student approached me about running a Dungeons & Dragons club in our school, I expected to see maybe half a dozen students. I brought some of my own personal books and accessories for the students to use. My the 2nd week, we had 30 students. Some came from the English as a second language program. Some are seniors about the graduate and move on to New York’s elite specialized high schools. Others are 6th grade students with learning and emotional disabilities, in our self-contained classrooms. We had 4 heterogeneous groups of students- many of whom would never have come together socially for anything else- role-playing problem-solving situations. (And making a LOT of what we teachers call “good noise”!) I do not have enough material to lend out to 30 students each week, and am requesting your help to flesh out the role-playing experience for my middle-school students.

Your generous donation to our project will make role-playing more visible and tactile for my students, and it will also make the games a lot more fun!
