My Students

We are a public school arts program serving 140 NYC DOE students annually from diverse backgrounds with 95% average daily attendance. Students participate in pre-conservatory training, preparing them for film school and life long learning in the arts.

Located in Astoria, Queens, our film program offers students access to complex histories and neighborly stories as subjects for narrative and documentary projects.

Similarly, the film students explore programming throughout the school in dance, drama, and other performing arts studios producing documentaries about school performances and individuals within the school community. Film students are curious and resourceful and often initiate cross-disciplinary projects with English and Social Studies classes, providing leadership in media production as they explore a career in film production, screenwriting, photography, public relations, marketing, and journalism.

My Project

Filmmaking is an art and craft which relies heavily on visual storytelling. The unique and personal stories of our young filmmakers deserve high production value. For that reason, having high-quality razor-sharp video is essential. As our film students prepare to apply to conservatories across the country, work on their reels, and hone the art and craft of cinematography, high production value becomes especially important.

Rokinon lenses, known for their high quality at lower prices, are perfect lenses for student filmmakers.

Despite that, the budgetary constraints of a public school make them almost impossible to acquire. Due to the heavy use by the junior and senior students on their productions, the demand for these lenses is high.

At the moment, only two Rokinon lenses are available for all productions. Repairs of broken lenses are even more expensive than the lenses themselves! Students working on separate films at the same time have no choice but to share the same lens. For example, a student crew working on a film in Brooklyn has to travel to Queens to pick up a lens from another crew to use for one day. Then, the lens has to travel back to Queens, so the Queen's crew can continue their production on the following day. This becomes a huge and unnecessary burden, especially when both, Senior and Junior classes are working on several productions during the same week.

With your help, we would be able to accommodate more students and to help create the high production value for the personal stories our film students love to tell.
